Hotell Kallgården, Day 1

August 9, 2026August 15, 2026

In August, we booked a stay at Hotell Kallgården in Kall, on the “back side” of Åreskutan. Here, you are surrounded by a fantastic landscape, with sweeping views across beautiful Lake Kallsjön and Åreskutan as a backdrop. This particular Sunday, however, showed us its colder and rainier side.

We were 21 enthusiastic participants arriving, some accompanied by their partners. The group was a mix – some had chosen the advanced watercolor course, while others joined the beginners’ course.

We gathered for lunch, and afterwards it was time to get started. Our first exercise was simple but useful: we were to paint a house without painting the areas touched by sunlight. A great way to practise leaving the white of the paper untouched and allowing it to become part of the painting.

We then moved on to a landscape painting where the task was to experiment with cropping the image – and to crop it boldly. Sometimes a painting can actually become more interesting when you dare to remove large parts of the subject and allow the most important elements to take centre stage.
